Sana

A video game designed for elders

[ interaction and art direction ]

Sana is a pioneering project in inclusive and interactive game design, with accessibility at its core. Created for elderly players (70+), the game offers cognitive challenges through short games and riddles that emphasize non-verbal communication and empathy. By integrating AI-driven tools like DALL-E, Midjourney, and Luma, we explored the boundaries of AI-assisted audio-visual motion design to align the visual language and interaction with our vision for the art direction. Designed with the specific needs of our target audience in mind, this video game aims to deliver an immersive, accessible experience that fosters cognitive engagement and emotional connection for elderly players, an often overlooked demographic in the industry.

Understanding our audience

Designed for elderly players (70 years +-), this game offers stimulating cognitive challenges through narrated short games and riddles, celebrating the beauty of non-verbal communication and the power of empathy in our shared experiences. The game can be played on an iPad or a large tablet, ensuring optimal visibility for elderly players, including those with visual impairments. To enhance the immersive experience, it incorporates haptic feedback through the use of a specially designed fingerless glove, allowing players to feel tactile responses as they interact with the game, stimulating their senses and promoting engagement. The combination of visual clarity, haptic sensations, and audio elements creates a rich, interactive environment that is accessible and enjoyable for the elderly.

The story

Embark on a captivating adventure in the enchanting landscape of Ha Giang as a gentle and introspective elderly soul, whose limited speech has shaped a rich inner world. After a mysterious storm freezes time, they encounter Hương, a magical monkey who communicates through gestures and intuition. Though expressing thoughts verbally can be challenging, this wise elder discovers an extraordinary ability to connect with monkeys, forging a unique bond that transcends words.

As the journey unfolds, players will solve engaging puzzles, interact with mystical monkeys, and learn to interpret symbols and emotions in new ways. Along the way, they will also delve into the vibrant culture and traditions of Vietnam, experiencing the breathtaking scenery, rich heritage, and warm hospitality of the local communities. This heartfelt adventure invites players to confront fears, embrace the strength of silence, and reconnect with the beauty of their surroundings.

Character design

For the character design we chose endearing, animated, and simple characters to convey a sense of warmth and joy. Anh, a reserved and introspective individual, is visually depicted with soft, approachable features that reflect his quiet nature. His simplicity and understated design mirror his emotional journey, creating a character that feels both relatable and endearing. Hu, the intuitive guide, is designed with gentle, expressive traits that communicate warmth and empathy. Her non-verbal communication is embodied through her body language and subtle gestures, which we captured in her design to highlight her role as a comforting and wise mentor. These character choices enhance the emotional connection with the players, evoking a sense of calm and joy while reinforcing the game's themes of empathy and silent communication.
